Good morning fat secret.well, I came to a big decision in my life. Lifting is no longer part of my fitness routine.life has I believe caught up to me, and that part of my routine just leaves me so sore.ever since my accident two years ago nothing has been the same.the pain doesn't allow me to do my job well and take care of my chores at home without being painful.so walking it is.if anybody has any suggestions I will take notes but for now here I stand.have a great day everybody stay safe healthy and strong.

You should have an evaluation by a hood doctor or nurse practitioner and may need to see a pain specialist. Also consider asking about some PT to help you identify exercises that help rather than hurt. I like swimming and cycling for low impact. Swimming also improves resistance

*good doctor. And yes I say good because it may take a little trial and error to find someone who will work with you. I just had to help my mom establish with a new doctor because her old one was awful and didn’t listen. The new one is great.

nothing wrong with walking, you can always get some lighter free-hand weights if you think you need it. :)

I would also suggest lighter weights but continue to do muscle toning, strength training with the end point being to avoid muscle atrophy. With the lifestyle you have that doesn’t seem to be the same issue that many of us city dwellers and apartment livers might have. Your activity level and strength training should not leave you in pain and unable to perform safely and effectively in your daily life.

I, too, did have to take a break from lifting to heal back and knee injuries. After an MRI, I have degenerative spinal Stenosis and 2 herniated discs in lumbar spine, 2 bulging discs in cervical spine & Osteoarthritis in knee. For 2 years, I focused walking, physical therapy and improving my limp/gait. 2 years later, October 2022, I resumed regular weight lifting. Started at 1x/2x a month, to be careful. January 2023:1x per week. From February 2023 on, I increased it by 1 day per month until I am comfortable in the routine/seeing results.

I would suggest swimming and cycling too like Morticia said. And like Kenna I’d suggest lighter weights too. I am starting back up with lifting after my heart attack and was advised I can still lift but at a much lighter weight, 20-30 rep range.

I am 63 and find it is a balancing act. On days I know n am going to be more physically active from my household or yard "chores" I skip all forms of intentional walking or strength training. My body can't handle it and does more damage than good. Maybe cut way back to two days and tailor which days that will be around your work schedule and plans for projects at home. You also didn't say if the issue was muscle pain or joint pain...so maybe you could tailor your lifting to more seated and prone positions to take the pressure of lower limbs if that's the case. Or much lighter weights but do more repetitions. Good Luck !!

you can still lift, just don't go real heavy and do certain exercises. You can also buy bands and do band exercises like rows, etc with those

all the suggestions are great thanks. I did lift lighter cut all weight by half.i have done rehab that helped a little.cut weight training down to two days a week and was still painful.i have a day set for my yearly bloodwork coming up this week and physical I will talk with Dr. to see about what's next.just stinks when you try and wake like you have been beat with sticks certain areas of the body.

Are you on any medications or have they increased the dosage where it says "joint pain, muscle pain, muscle weakness"? Even if the risk says "rare" that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Statins as one example can cause muscle and joint pain. There is a blood test to check CK levels which can test if that's the case. I hope you are able to find some relief and answers from your doctor.

My doctor wants me to limit my activity to walking or water exercises. So I can relate.

It could be just walking and I'm fine with that

Mountain man, I lift everyday. It's part of who I am but I'm definitely starting to feel effects. I wear multiple soft braces and lately my right elbow kills me every time I do bicep curls. I take vitamins, stretch before and after and it helps a bit but I fear lighter weights may be in my future. No advice just support...💪💜

Yup. Why I mostly walk and swim. Certain parts of me are more worn out than others. That said, see if you can find some physical recovery routines that are designed to come back from injury. Lighter weights, more reps, resistance training. This is also where machines can help because they remove the instability factor out of movements.

I'm 61 and I have frequent muscle soreness, because I go to the gym, play volleyball and pickleball. I find that yoga and stretching in general make my body feel better. But, the whole reason that I workout is the moments when I'm playing a sport or playing with the grandkids and feeling completely like a kid again myself. It is worth it to me. I had joint pain in the past but I fixed it with fitness. If I sit still for too long my joints start hurting again. There is no easy answer to getting old.

Tough decision to make and one that will take some adjustment, all I can say is try different things to find out what you can do pain free and enjoy. Walking, cycling, rowing, climbing, yoga so much to try just important to keep moving.

I gave up the gym after injuring my elbow, knee, and shoulder. I just turned fifty and it's getting to where what used to be minor bumps and bruises hurt worse and take longer to heal than they ever did. It's age catching up, like you said, the gym is great, but sooner or later everyone succumbs to the grind of time.
