"Your Rigid Eating Attitudes are Doing More Harm Than Good

This ties into the previous topic and the idea of rigid and flexible dieting (I prefer flexible eating). Rigid dieting attitudes refer to conceptualizing food as good/bad or thinking in black and white. In contrast, flexible eaters recognize shades of gray.

And study after study after study shows that flexible eating attitudes are superior to rigid ones overall. Certainly, some get away with rigid eating approaches, usually athletes with an extreme goal. But for most it fails. You can see this in droves in the clean eating community. For every one person who makes it work, you can find dozens who fly off the rails. They binge constantly, suffer enormous mental stress. Many end up with eating disorders.

Adopting more flexible eating attitudes, even if you don’t use the flexible strategies, is a key to long term success."

"Short-Term Water Retention I’ve been writing about the issue of water retention “masking” weight and fat loss for longer than I can remember. It’s one of thoes things that can happen on a diet where various mechanisms may be involved. I’ve typically focused on cortisol here. Cortisol is a stress hormone that can impact on water retention (Cushing’s disease is an extreme version). And when you combine mentally stressed dieters with hard dieting and exercise you often get chronic elevations in cortisol. And with that can come water retention. The practical impact of this being that true weight and fat loss may be “masked” by water retention. If someone is losing one pound per week of fat but holding 3-4 pounds of water weight due to cortisol, they may not see measurable fat loss for a month."

can you explain number 4 reality? my diet seems to be working and it's pretty ridged with little variation; same 3 meals every day. how would it be harmful except for lack of a variety of nutrients?

Thank you for that. I’ve been clean eating healthy for two months and saw nothing. I know it’s a slow process. But also about carbs. I was in a strict diet for 7months and lost 50 lbs. then one day I saw some chips and salsa and was like this is ok and boom 3 months later gained it back. So that is extreme but a pice of gluten free bread or Ak-Mak cracker is really gonna keep me from loosing weight? I basically can’t have any type of carb even if it is grains?

Denying yourself food, regardless if it’s carby, sweet, etc sets your mindset up for failure. Instead, focus on positive thinking, like I feel good today, maybe I ll go for a walk for ten minutes or other enjoyable activity. If you are hungry and you still want a cracker, then eat one or whatever amount satisfy you. Get it out of your system then you can move forward. Taking care of yourself is way more important than what the scales say. Savor the food, enjoy it. Food is not your advisory. ❤️🤗

All I know is I eat a variety of foods including pasta, bread, sugar, fats, etc. I try to eat limited quantities of foods high in calories. I also try to eat lots of fruits, veggies & protein. I have been able to lose weight doing this.

going to a Halloween party tonight, I am going to eat whatever is served in modest amounts...I may go over a bit, it will not be the end of the world....not rigid, flexible!

Diablo, you’re first comment😊 like I clearly know that I completely gained that significant weight in 2 days via water retention and a very stressed out tummy. I read up on how much I would have to actually eat to gain 1 pound and was like nope that is definitely not a contributing factor.
