I was speaking to DP about one of my pet peeves. The whole, I'm addicted to sugar and calling any and all junk food sugars and/or carbs. I recently read a post on the main forums called "Getting rid of sugar craving." In the post they mentioned loving chocolate. Chocolate has more fat calories than sugar/carb calories. 100 grams of chocolate has 34.2 grams of fat and 59.6 grams of carbs. That translates to 307.8 fat calories and 238.4 carb calories. Is it the fat or the sugar that causes it to be "addicting"(not a thing but let's pretend)? It's the combination of fat+carbs, not the sugar alone.

Other examples
Calories per 100g of some "problem" foods
Pizza= 110.79 fat 80 carb
Doughnuts 206.1 fat and 203.2 carb
Biscuits and Gravy= 128.88 fat and 79.56 carb
Cheesecake= Fat 202.5 Carb 102
Potato chips= Fat 337.23 Carb 198.96
Strawberry Pop Tarts= Fat 103.86 Carb 284.6
Fettuccine Alfredo= Fat 77.31 Carb 96.36

You get the idea. There are exceptions for each like bacon for fat and gummi bears for carbs, but I'd say both fat and carbs together are the problem, not just carbs/sugar. If sugar was inherently fattening fruit wouldn't be a good way to cut calories and lose fat and if it were addictive on it's own people would eat nothing but gummis or sugar straight from the bag. This doesn't happen. It might be one of the ways they create a calorie surplus but then so is bacon and butter.

This won't change a thing, people will still call things like cheesecake "sweets" even though it has twice as many fat calories, but maybe it will make people think a little more about putting all the blame on sugar.

Also, if fruit isn't fattening because of the fiber couldn't you make gummi bears non-fattening by drinking some psyllium husk with them? Trick question, they aren't fattening since you still need a calorie surplus for something to be fattening, no matter the source.

I guess I could say I love fatty foods but it sounds gross.

I call anything that tastes sweet to be a ‘sweet’. One of my drs and the nutritionist where I did my body scans both said it’s the combo of fat and sugar that causes problems. If we can cut out ‘processed sweets and junk’ we can get a better control on our weight and health. Their words not mine lol.

I guess I don't really care about people calling them sweets but everybody calls it sugar addiction or sugars when there's just as much fat if not more.

So much fat in chips. They were my issue for a very long time. So glad I got control on it. Now I eat them once a week and weigh them out. 50g of chips in my head is nothing near 50g on the scale!! Before I’d eat the whole bag. I’ve come further than I realize. Growing up I’d eat this and ‘sweets!’ Where I’m from, mothers bake like there’s no tomorrow. My mom always had homemade cakes and cookies and pies and bread and donuts (she made the best homemade donuts!!!!) and cinnamon rolls and muffins and in and on. Funny thing is, we weren’t restricted at all, we could eat what we wanted, when and however much. AND we were soooooo skinny. But active!!! I mean outside on our bikes, swimming, ice skating, sledding, walking up the big hill and sled down, back up over and over, we didn’t stop, all seasons, outside from daylight til dark. I’m sure our ci were way less than our co! That’s what it’s all about right? Cico! Sweets or fat, does it matter?? Not a bit really.

What makes it bad? How much fruit before I cause irreversible damage? 🙄

Besides, you missed the whole point of this post.

sugars that are not natural are bad,, natural sugars in fruit okay... frosting, cake donuts candy bars ect...bad... even my trainer that lifts weights stays away from it...

Cool. Now show me the proof. It is all metabolized the same way. From high fructose corn syrup to fruit sugar. The only difference is that fruit has fiber and vitamins.

Trainers are just that, trainers, not dieticians or nutritionists.

https://examine.com/nutrition/difference-between-hfcs-and-sugar/ Even high fructose corn syrup affects us the same way as natural sugar.

People say they are addicted to sugar but it’s the taste of sweetness they crave. In the US it has been added to most processed foods. Why? To make it sweet and you want to eat more. Sugar in and of itself has zero nutritional value. Combine it with processed fats and you have an obesity epidemic.

I am sorry I didn't read the whole post, I get bored easy.. I just think it shouldn't be so complicating, I believe that you just need to have a diet that your body only needs, fruit , veggies, whole grains, good fats , nuts, good protein, grass fed meats...just healthy things that makes you feel good.... cakes , candy, processed. boo!

Good for you jdeuster. It would be nice that if someone is going to comment on a journal they could at least know what they are commenting on. I can't even find the part where I was waving pompoms for added sugars. I do find it funny when people say something is bad when they can't even explain why. Also, all of those foods you mentioned are good but only in moderation for me. If I stick to the strictly it only results in a binge so you could say they are bad for me. Lol

Yes, calorie dense, thanks Keyten!

I think I rather have the fruit with the fiber and vitamins, not the high fructose. . lol

Migsmom, would you say that the fats in a Little Debbie cake is added fat? Also, why isn't it also bad?

Figures, Peeper. Yes wifey, chips may be the absolute easiest thing to over eat. So good and salty. Mmmmm
