I like this site, and using it to log my daily food intake has really taught me a lot about the amount of calories certain foods have. But I thought of something the other day that I would like to see on the site, if it's not on here already and I just haven't figured it out. I would like to see something that can add or subtract calories on certain foods already in the system so that you can get a more accurate reading when you list what you ate. So that you may better understand what I mean, I will use a Big Mac from McDonald's as an example. If you eat a Big Mac the way it's commonly prepared, then you would be taking in 530 calories. But if you make a modification of adding certain items (e.g. extra sauce), or subtracting others (e.g. no cheese, then you have affected the amount of calories you get from eating the sandwich. If you type in "Big Mac" and begin playing with the specs, you can learn how adding or subtracting items can affect the overall calories. Many restaurants are already doing this on their web pages, and by having this feature available on this site, you can more accurately record the amount of calories you take in, and you can make adjustments as needed. As I say, I'm not sure if there is a feature on here that performs this function, but if not, I think it would sure help a lot of us to make better-informed decisions on our intake.

Yep. Even without it I can still get ball park figure on my intake, and that gives me something to work with. But you never know, they may add it sometime down the road.

I checked, and it just lists items on the menu. Thanks anyway.

You could always change the portion size you enter to roughly adjust for the caloric differential. Instead of saying you had 1 of whatever it was, you could say you had 0.9 or some other reduced multiplier of the food in question.

My advice would be that you have the option of writing in your own modified food item, so if you calculate what your special order is, and plan to repeat it, you can pull up the item. I would understand if this site would hesitate doing what you suggest as data entry of each food, each recipe, each restaurant, each ingredient, would be logistically impossible. A restaurant has a very limited menu in contrast to look at options. And they know their ingredients and proportions. I break down various foods much like you desire, salads for example, to note separate ingredients as I make some things from scratch rather than go with generic numbers. Not too tough to do, just a bit time consuming.

As far as changing the portion size, I have done that on numerous occasions. That does adjust the calories on here, but it doesn't do it automatically if you leave off a particular ingredient, or add an extra helping of it. But since this site apparently doesn't do it, you might have to do some extra checking to get a more accurate result.

the amount of data and work your talking about is massive. right now the calories of a BigMac are a known thing. To break it down piece by piece is a project Then to do it to EVERY item in the current database that is made up of more then one items would be extraordinary undertaking. Cause we are talking more then just a single Big Mac after all.

Could be, but you never know ... we may get this feature one day. That's what I'm hoping for.

I think of the calories listed as a ball-park figure. Sometimes I can't find an exact match for what I'm eating, so I log the closest thing I can find. Other times I'm guessing at portion sizes - like the ice cream I'm eating right now. I accept that it's not 100% accurate, but I think it's pretty close.

I think you can as i adjust the amount i eat ..everytime you pick a food example: apple ....dont tick the box ..tap on the word and you can write whatever you need before confirming it ...i found it more accurate and its amasingvto see were you are going wrong or good.goodluck

I'm afraid if any site ever decided to tackle this project, they would have to charge for it. As Gregward noted, it would be a major project, to say the least.

Ideally that would be nice, but as long as you are in the ballpark no worries. I rarely eat out, so it's easier to record exactly what I've eaten especially since I eat mainly whole foods.
